How to Improve Your WiFi Signal: What Actually Works

The short version

You are not supposed to notice your WiFi. It should just work. So if you are looking to learn how to improve your WiFi signal, something is nagging at you: a video that keeps buffering, a call that drops in the back bedroom, a download that crawls.

Here is how to fix it, from a company that builds fast, reliable internet for a living and does not sell you a shelf of gadgets to fix it.

Start here: is it your WiFi or your internet?

These are two different things, and people call both of them “slow internet.”

Your WiFi is the radio signal bouncing around your home from your router. Your internet is the connection coming into your home from your provider. WiFi problems and connection problems have completely different fixes, so it is worth two minutes to find out which one you actually have.

The test: plug a laptop straight into your router or gateway with an ethernet cable and run a speed test. Then run the same test over WiFi, standing in the same room. Compare the two.

  • If the wired test is fast and the WiFi test is slow, you have a WiFi problem, and the rest of this guide is for you.
  • If both tests are slow, no amount of WiFi tweaking will help. The bottleneck is your connection or your plan, and we cover that near the end.

What actually affects your WiFi signal

WiFi is like a radio: it gets weaker with distance and with anything solid in its way. A handful of things drag it down:

  • Distance and walls. Concrete, brick, tile, metal, and mirrors all block signal. So does water, which is why a big fish tank or even a full refrigerator can sit in the way.
  • Interference. Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors share the airwaves. So does every neighbor’s network, especially in an apartment.
  • The wrong band. 2.4 GHz travels far but is slow and crowded. 5 GHz and 6 GHz are much faster but do not reach as far.
  • A crowded channel. Each band is split into channels, and in a dense building dozens of networks can pile onto the same one.
  • Old equipment. A router a few standards behind simply cannot do what a modern one can.
  • Everything at once. Every stream, call, and download shares the same connection. Enough of them at the same time and it shows.
  • The connection underneath. Covered above. WiFi can only broadcast the speed it is given.

How to improve your WiFi signal, ranked by what works best

Most guides hand you fifteen tips in no particular order. Here they are in the order we would actually try them, with the free and effective ones first.

1. Move your router

This is the fix nobody wants to hear, because it is not a product. It is also the one that makes the biggest difference for the most people.

Put your router in a central, elevated, open spot. Off the floor, out of the cabinet, away from the TV and the microwave. Every wall and metal object between the router and you costs you signal.

If your gateway lives in a closet by the front door because that is where the line happened to come in, that placement is working against you.

2. Put your devices on the right band

Modern routers broadcast on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and, on newer WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 gear, 6 GHz. A simple rule: use 5 GHz or 6 GHz for anything close to the router that needs speed, like the laptop you work on or the TV you stream to.

Use 2.4 GHz for far-away or low-demand devices, like a smart plug in the garage. Many routers let you give each band its own network name so you can choose. One catch on 6 GHz: both your router and your device have to support it.

3. Pick a less crowded channel

Your router picks a channel on its own, and in a crowded building it often picks a bad one. A free WiFi analyzer app will show you which channels your neighbors are stacked on. On 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only three that do not overlap, so pick whichever is quietest. On 5 GHz and 6 GHz you have far more room to spread out.

4. Restart it, then update it

Restarting your router clears out the small glitches that build up over weeks. While you are in there, check for a firmware update.

Manufacturers ship bug fixes and speed improvements, and a lot of people never install a single one.

5. Run a cable to the things that do not move

Your TV, game console, and desktop do not need WiFi. An ethernet cable gives them a faster, steadier connection, and, just as usefully, gets them off the airwaves so everything else has more room to breathe.

6. Turn on the smart settings you already have

Most modern routers include QoS, or quality of service, which lets you prioritize video calls and gaming over background downloads. Many also offer band steering, which quietly moves devices onto the best band for them. If your router has these, switch them on.

7. Fix dead zones with mesh, not a cheap extender

If one corner of the house is a dead zone, a mesh system is almost always the right answer. It uses several units that pass your devices off to each other seamlessly as you move around, all on one network name.

The single-plug range extender is tempting because it is cheap, but most of them create a second, slower network and can cut the speed on that band roughly in half, since the same radio has to both receive and rebroadcast every packet. Mesh costs more. It also actually works.

8. Upgrade the router only if it is genuinely old

If your router is more than about four or five years old, it may be the ceiling everything else is bumping into. WiFi 6, and now WiFi 7, handle busy households far better than older gear.

One honest caveat: do not buy a top-of-the-line WiFi 7 router to sit on top of a slow connection. A fast router cannot invent speed the line underneath it does not have. Match the router to the connection you actually have.

9. Kick off the freeloaders

A network anyone can join is a network you are sharing without meaning to. Use WPA3 security and a strong password, and set up a separate guest network for visitors and smart-home gadgets. It is a security basic first, and a quiet performance fix second.

Still have dead zones? Coverage beats one strong signal

The goal is not a single heroic signal blasting through the whole house. It is even coverage everywhere you actually use it. In a smaller place, good router placement often gets you there on its own. In a larger or multi-floor home, a mesh system with a wired connection between the units, called a wired backhaul, gives you close to full speed in every room. An extender is a last resort for one stubborn spot, not a plan for the whole house.

What counts as a “good” WiFi speed?

“Good” depends on what your household does at the same time, not on one big number on a box. Light use, like email, browsing, and a single stream, is comfortable on a modest plan. A household with people streaming in different rooms, working from home on video calls, and gaming all at once wants far more headroom, and wants it to stay steady.

Two things matter as much as the download number, and most people never hear about them:

  • Upload speed. Video calls, cloud backups, posting, and gaming all lean on upload. Cable plans often give you only a fraction of your download speed to upload with. Fiber gives you the same speed in both directions.
  • Latency. This is the lag, the small delay before data starts moving. Low latency is what makes calls and games feel instant. Fiber tends to run lower and steadier than cable.

So the honest answer to “what is a good speed” is: enough that nobody in the house notices it. Internet you never have to think about is the whole point.

When better WiFi will not help

If you have moved the router, cleared the channel, added mesh where you needed it, and run the wired-versus-WiFi test, and that wired test is still slow, you have done everything you can inside the house. At that point the limit is the connection coming in, and the fix is a better connection, not another gadget.
